Vaginal cancer is rare, and unfortunately, the symptoms of this cancer are hard to spot in the early stages.

adminFebruary 20, 2026

Vaginal cancer is rare, and unfortunately, the symptoms can be hard to notice in the early stages. Because early signs are often mild or similar to other common conditions, many women do not realize something is wrong right away.

Here’s what you should know 👇

What Is Vaginal Cancer?
Vaginal cancer happens when abnormal cells grow in the tissues of the vagina. Most cases are a type called squamous cell carcinoma, which begins in the thin, flat cells lining the vaginal wall.

One of the main risk factors is infection with Human papillomavirus (HPV), a very common virus that can also increase the risk of cervical cancer.

Early Symptoms Are Often Subtle

In the beginning, many women have no symptoms at all. When symptoms do appear, they may include:

  1. Unusual vaginal bleeding
Bleeding after menopause, between periods, or after sex can be an early warning sign.
  2. Abnormal vaginal discharge
Watery, bloody, or foul-smelling discharge that is not normal for you.
  3. Pain during intercourse
Discomfort or pain that feels new or unexplained.
  4. Pelvic pain
Persistent pain in the lower abdomen or pelvic area.
  5. A lump or mass
Some women may feel a lump inside the vagina.
  6. Changes in urination
Pain when urinating or frequent urination in more advanced cases.

Because these symptoms can also be caused by infections, hormonal changes, or less serious conditions, they are sometimes ignored.

Who Is at Higher Risk?

Women over 60
Those with long-term HPV infection
Women who have had cervical precancer or cancer
Smokers
Those with weakened immune systems

Why Early Checkups Matter

Routine pelvic exams and Pap tests can help detect abnormal cells before they turn into cancer. Even though vaginal cancer is rare, reporting unusual symptoms early can make a major difference in treatment success.

When to See a Doctor

If you notice unusual bleeding, ongoing discharge, pain, or any persistent change that lasts more than two weeks, it’s important to get checked. It may turn out to be something simple—but it’s always safer to rule out serious causes.
