You may have seen headlines suggesting that sleeping on your right side is dangerous. The reality is more balanced. Your sleep position can affect certain health conditions, but sleeping on your right side does not automatically mean something is wrong.

Here’s what science says:
For people with acid reflux or GERD, sleeping on the right side may sometimes worsen symptoms. This is because of the position of the stomach relative to the esophagus. Many doctors suggest that left-side sleeping may reduce nighttime reflux for some individuals.
For heart health, some small studies suggest that people with certain heart conditions may feel more comfortable on one side over the other. However, there is no strong evidence that sleeping on the right side causes heart disease.
During pregnancy, especially in the third trimester, doctors often recommend sleeping on the left side. This position may improve blood flow to the placenta and reduce pressure on major blood vessels. Sleeping occasionally on the right side is not dangerous, but left-side sleeping is generally preferred.
For most healthy people, the best sleep position is simply the one that allows comfortable, uninterrupted rest. Quality sleep matters more than which side you choose.
However, if you notice symptoms such as frequent heartburn at night, shortness of breath when lying on one side, chest discomfort, or severe reflux, it’s worth discussing with a healthcare provider.
Your body sometimes chooses a position for comfort. Instead of worrying about which side you sleep on, focus on good sleep habits: a supportive mattress, proper pillow alignment, a consistent bedtime, and limiting heavy meals before sleep.
In most cases, sleeping on your right side is completely normal and safe.
