Taking Amlodipine 12 Things to Avoid While Taking Your Medication!

adminFebruary 20, 2026

Amlodipine is commonly prescribed to treat high blood pressure and chest pain (angina). It works by relaxing blood vessels so blood can flow more easily. While it’s effective, certain foods, habits, and medications can interfere with how it works or increase side effects.

Here are 12 important things to avoid while taking amlodipine:

  1. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice
Grapefruit can increase the level of amlodipine in your blood. This may raise the risk of side effects like dizziness, flushing, or swelling.
  2. Drinking too much alcohol
Alcohol can lower your blood pressure even more. When combined with amlodipine, it may cause lightheadedness, fainting, or weakness.
  3. Skipping doses
Missing doses can cause your blood pressure to rise again. Try to take it at the same time every day.
  4. Suddenly stopping the medication
Do not stop taking amlodipine without your doctor’s advice. Stopping suddenly may worsen chest pain or increase blood pressure.
  5. Taking certain antibiotics without checking
Some antibiotics like Clarithromycin can increase amlodipine levels in your body and raise the risk of side effects.
  6. Using certain antifungal medications
Drugs such as Ketoconazole may interfere with how your body processes amlodipine.
  7. Combining with other blood pressure medicines without supervision
Mixing medications like Lisinopril or Losartan without proper monitoring can cause blood pressure to drop too low.
  8. Taking NSAIDs frequently
Pain relievers such as Ibuprofen may reduce the effectiveness of blood pressure medications if used regularly.
  9. Eating very high-salt foods
Too much salt can counteract the blood pressure-lowering effects of amlodipine.
  10. Driving if you feel dizzy
Amlodipine may cause dizziness, especially when you first start taking it. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery if you feel lightheaded.
  11. Ignoring swelling in your legs or ankles
Swelling (edema) is a common side effect. Do not ignore sudden or severe swelling—contact your doctor if it worsens.
  12. Taking herbal supplements without advice
Some supplements can affect blood pressure or interact with medication. Always inform your healthcare provider before adding herbs or vitamins.

If you’re taking amlodipine for hypertension or heart disease, regular blood pressure checks and follow-ups are important. If you notice chest pain, severe dizziness, irregular heartbeat, or allergic reactions, seek medical care immediately.
